Development of the Boeing N2S began when General Hap Arnold commissioned Lloyd Stearman and his company to create a primary trainer plane that can be used by all military branches. It is believed that this move came after the US anticipated another world war. Stearman Aircraft Corporation came up with the Model 75 aircraft which was the earliest version of the PT-17.
The plane was inexpensive and had a distinguishable look (open cockpit, bi-winged, and covered in fabric). Nonetheless, the Model 75 boasted good maneuverability and durability. Thus, it was immediately employed by the US Navy and the US Army Air Corps. The aircraft was re-designated as the Kaydet when Boeing Aircraft bought Stearman but it was more commonly known as the Stearman. At some point, the US Navy began calling the plane as the Yellow Peril. The name came after, well, the bright yellow scheme and the planes tendency to ground loop after landing.
