Certified as a Part 23 aerobatic aircraft by the Federal Aviation Regulation, the T-3A Slingsby was a training aircraft that trained many student pilots in the basics of military-style maneuvers and traffic patterns. It featured a cockpit with a sliding canopy and dual throttles, among other innovations.
With its fully composite structure, the aircraft also featured an integral fuel tank in each wing and tricycle style, fixed landing gear. The Slingsby was primarily used by the Air Education and Training Command of the US Air Force to train pilots in combat aerobatics and spins, aside from the usual military techniques. It superseded the T-41 aircraft due to the T-41s incapability of performing such maneuvers. As a training aircraft, the Slingsby also trained student pilots in takeoffs and landings, slow flight, and mission planning.
